Đánh dấu sự trở lại của Nguyễn Huy An sau 3 năm kể từ triển lãm cá nhân thứ ba của anh tại Sài Gòn năm 2019, trưng bày lần này tạo dựng một nơi chốn cho những vật thể/quan hệ cá biệt, một cuộc cùng hiện diện của những phần tử dị lạ (chúng xa lạ giữa nhau và thoạt trông cũng có vẻ xa lạ cả với những người đã biết đến và theo dõi thực hành nghệ thuật của Huy An lâu nay).

Không tái lặp những hình ảnh cũ (xoay quanh ký ức cá nhân và đồng quê Bắc Bộ) hay những biểu tượng thường trực (của văn hóa tâm linh, của tính thiêng - điều phàm) đậm màu hoài niệm quen thuộc trong sáng tác của An những năm qua, bốn đề mục - bốn bộ tác phẩm trong trưng bày lần này trình hiện những chiêm nghiệm mới và ‘vẫn đang tiếp diễn’ về khả thể của hành động nhìn/ của sự thấy:

• Một khảo cứu về vùng mù rất nhỏ trong tầm nhìn của ngựa
• Một mô phỏng lại ‘Dư địa chí’ thời Minh Mạng
• Một luồng sáng cực mạnh rọi vào nguồn sáng cực tiểu / dấu vết còn lại khi ánh sáng vắng mặt
• Một dải dài triền cảnh xóa nhòa, ngắt đều bởi 51 nhịp màu những vết cháy sáng của tấm ảnh đầu trong 1 cuộn phim

Một bảng sắc thái của các tình huống, những gạch đầu dòng của các khả năng; vừa rành mạch vừa kỳ bí, từ các nguồn tham chiếu hoàn toàn dị biệt; ‘Bốn đề mục [Thấy hoặc Không thấy]’ vì vậy như một chuỗi những ám hiệu cài xen vào những khoảng trống của không gian phòng triển lãm, không nhằm chủ đích tạo dựng một trần thuật cụ thể nào; thay vào đó những chỉ dấu này gần giống như hệ thống lẫy khóa, một khi thấy được mấu chốt, nhiều điều có thể cùng bật mở. Từng bộ tác phẩm - hiện diện như những mảnh lưu trữ vụn rời rải rác, ngoài sự thống nhất trong vẻ kiệm lời, tĩnh lặng, giản lược và đôi chút bóng dáng những ký hiệu cá nhân của Huy An (dấu ấn của ánh sáng và bóng tối - khoảng trống ẩn danh - việc lưu trữ những mảnh văn hóa rụng rơi, thu lưu bóng hình biến mất của quá vãng); bốn sắp đặt khi được cất để cạnh nhau vào trong một không gian đồng nhất với những vênh lệch về mặt thị giác, phát sinh sức nén của tùy tạo và ngẫu biến, của phi lý và phù du, của tính tuyệt đối với cái - không - hạn - định.

‘Thấy hoặc Không thấy’ bởi vậy, không phải là một phân định rạch ròi kiểu không là A thì hẳn là B; lại cũng hoàn toàn không phải một nghi ngờ, chất vấn để lựa chọn. Tất cả đều là ẩn dụ, điều gì đó nơi này nói về điều gì đó nơi kia; một tiếng “không” có thể là một tiếng “có”. ‘Bốn đề mục’ của Huy An mở ra một không gian phi giới hạn, nơi ta thử vượt thoát giới hạn thông thường trong nhận thức vốn luôn bị chi phối bởi thông tin thị giác.

Manzi is proud to present ‘The Four Subjects’ - a new series of installations by visual artist Nguyễn Huy An, one of the most important figures of Vietnamese contemporary art.

For this comeback after three years (since his third solo show in Saigon), Huy An assembles an exclusive space for singular objects/relationships which would provoke an odd encounter of disparate subjects (they are essentially alien to each other and, at first sight, seemingly unfamiliar to the keen followers of Huy An’s art practices as well).

The new series of installation artworks features neither a reiteration of Huy An’s recurring motifs centered around his personal memories and the rural Northern Vietnam nor a replay of predominant themes such as local religious & spiritual dimensions and the divine & the profane which had often haunted Huy An’s practices with subtle shading of nostalgia for the past years. ‘The Four subjects’, nevertheless, is a display of his new and ongoing meditations on the potential possibilities of the visible / the action of seeing:

• A study of a very narrow blind area in the horse’s vision
• A reproduction of the comprehensive illustrated encyclopedia of Vietnamese Geography in the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng
• A co-presence of a lasting powerful light source and an ephemeral standard light with the minimum luminous intensity/ traces of its absence
• An extended thread of blanked-out images rhythmically punctuated with 51 bright colorful trails - effects of light leak in the first frames at the beginning of a film roll

A nuanced diagram of various scenarios, a bulleted list of prospects, with conciseness, clarity yet ambiguity, on the basis of diverse references. ‘The Four Subjects’, therefore, resists the tendency to be interpreted as a coherent narrative that compels clear-cut messages or epic conclusions, but rather, provides clues of a puzzle lock. Scattered in a clear irreducible space, four sets of installations formulate somewhat of a tricky multi-point latching system; once this mechanism is unlocked with the right key, all pieces eventually fall into place. However, before the time comes, this arrangement, in the form of fragmented archives, is a dissonant structure. Apart from sharing some common characteristics of the artist’s reticence and restraint along with the faint imprints of his personal codes (the light and shadow, the anonymous empty space/ darkness and the futile attempt to preserve the remnants of vanishing cultures or to record the faded shades of the past), four installations of ‘The Four Subjects’, albeit connected in one theme called ‘seeing’, manifest themselves in a visual disharmony. This discordant presence set off a tension of the haphazard and the random, of the absurdity and the evanescence, of the definitive and the infinite.

In that way, entailed in Four Subjects the implication of ‘Seeing or Not Seeing’/‘In sight or Out of sight’ is not a mutually exclusive claim or a two-choice question. Instead, a ‘No’ can be a ‘Yes’ and vice versa, everything is a metaphor. By confronting us with confounding variables in his experiment, Huy An opens up a free space that enables us to go beyond our limited perception which has always been dominated by our sense of sight and visual information.
